A riff on the classic John Wayne Western ANGEL AND THE BADMAN, THE OUTSIDER is a made-for-cable film about love and religion colliding with the machismo and violence of America's Wild West. The lovely Naomi Watts stars as Rebecca Yoder, a religious widow whose husband has been murdered by an evil band of cattle ranchers. When wounded gunslinger Johnny Gault (Tim Daly) rolls into town, Rebecca forges an unexpected relationship with the cynical stranger as she nurses him back to health. But as her feud with the ranchers escalates to boiling point and Johnny moves in to settle the score, Rebecca finds herself forced to choose between her burgeoning love for him and commitment to her pacifist religious beliefs. This 1961 Western is Marlon Brando's only directorial effort. It's the Old West of 1880, and Brando stars as Kid Rio, who along with his partner, Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) are bank robbers who are caught holding up a Mexican bank. Longworth gets away and allows his partner to get caught and go to jail. When Rio is releases five years later, he goes out to seek revenge, however he is surprised to find his partner is married with a stepdaughter and sheriff of a town. William Wellman skillfully directs the life story of William F. Cody, who's better known as Buffalo Bill. Based on a story by Frank Winch, there is plenty of action as the stages of his life unfold. The journey begins with his early years as an Indian fighter, jumps to his days as a scout and campaigner for Indian rights, and culminates in a display of his later years of Wild West showmanship. The full-on conflict between the U.S. Cavalry and the Cheyenne tribe at War Bonnet Gorge, in which Cody finds himself going head to head with his former Indian friend, is one of the most riveting sequences in the film. Joel McCrea is completely convincing in the title role, and Maureen O' Hara is both earnest and sensual as the senator's daughter who becomes his wife. The film is escapist in the best sense, revealing a number of colorful exterior panoramas. The rest of the solid cast, which includes Linda Darnell as a schoolteacher who loves Cody, keeps this light fare worthwhile.
