Doc Holliday (Walter Huston) meets the notorious Billy the Kid (Jack Beutel), who has stolen his horse. Doc's old friend Pat Garrett, now a sheriff, wants to arrest the Kid for murder, but Doc helps his young friend flee to a hideout, where Billy meets Rio (Jane Russell), a beautiful young woman who soon finds herself falling in love with him. As Doc and Billy try to evade the law, they run into a series of adventures involving Indians and gunfights, culminating in a fierce showdown. Under the control of director/ producer Howard Hughes, THE OUTLAW became both a classic Western and a tribute to the charms of its leading lady, 19-year-old Jane Russell, whose cleavage was featured prominently in the film's publicity. As a result, THE OUTLAW became one of the most controversial films of the 1940s, leading to a protracted battle with censors that only added to the film's allure. BONANZA is a sprawling western television series about wealthy rancher Ben Cartwright and his three sons---Adam (Pernell Roberts), a two-fisted gunfighter with a penchant for design and engineering; Hoss (Dan Blocker), a huge and slightly dimwitted but good-hearted strongman in a big white ten-gallon hat; and Little Joe (Michael Landon, later of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE), a young hothead always getting into trouble over women or disputes of any imaginable description with almost anybody. Like all 1950s TV western series leads, the Cartwrights were superb fistfighters, able to knock almost anyone unconscious with a single blow from either fist. Ben had the enviable advantage of having apparently been everywhere and done everything prior to settling down on his thousand-acre empire (the Ponderosa) outside Virginia City, Nevada, so he could always speak from an intimidating reservoir of experience. In Blood on the Land, one of the screen's finest actors, Everett Sloane (CITIZEN KANE), portrays a rogue shepherd using the Ponderosa's grassy meadows to feed his hungry sheep.
