This western finds a bunch of settlers facing some terrifying foes as they try to make a home for themselves. Beset by villainous characters in the dead of night, the settlers encounter murder and countless threats to their lives, then discover that the bunch of miscreants who torment them are intent on possessing the land on which they dwell. An attempt to take the case to court results in further bloodshed when the president of the court is mysteriously murdered, but justice may prevail if they can get the case to go ahead, leading to some nail-biting final moments in this film from director William Nigh.

The notorious Billy the Kid (Buster Crabbe) wreaks havoc on Texas when he breaks out of jail to meet up with his friend Fuzzy (Al. Fuzzy St. John). Along the way, he meets Mort Slade (L. Stanford Jolley), who wants a mortgage held by the local banker, Joan Ainsley (Iris Meredith). Slade and his men seek revenge by robbing the bank, the causing panic by spreading the word that the institution has run out of liquid cash.

William Holden (NETWORK, SUNSET BOULEVARD) stars in this rugged Western--based on an actual incident--as a Mexican-Irish rancher who sells his herd to the Union army during the Civil War. An eye-patch-wearing Confederate colonel (Richard Widmark) tries to buy the cattle, but apolitical Kelly doesn't sell to him solely because he doesn't think Confederate money will ever be worth anything. However, the determined colonel kidnaps Kelly and forces him to steal the cattle back and drive them south to his hungry troops down in Virginia. Director Edward Dmytryk (THE CAINE MUTINY) provides the requisite roping, shooting, and punching; Johnny Mercer songs set the mood. There's also some romantic double-crossing as mansion owner Charity Warwick (Victoria Shaw) helps the colonel trap Kelly, who later repays the favor by wooing the colonel's frustrated sweetheart (Janice Rule). Holden is fairly laconic as Kelly, but Widmark brings furious energy to his role as the colonel. Weather-beaten regulars such as Arthur Franz, Patrick O'Neal, and Roger Carmel round out the cast.
