Barbara Stanwyck (STELLA DALLAS) stars as Jessica Drummond, a rancher who runs her Arizona cattle ranch with an iron hand and a private army of 40 hired guns. The tough-as-nails matriarch has a troublesome brother whom she nonetheless dotes on, and when he shoots the sheriff she comes to his aid, unable to say no. This instigates an all-out war, which is further complicated by the fact that the new Marshall, Griff Bonnell (Barry Sullivan) falls hard for Jessica, and she returns his feelings. A gem from auteur Samuel Fuller (THE BIG RED ONE) that reads as a noir dressed as a western, the film ingeniously invokes genre tropes to investigate the intricacies of sex and love; its conclusions are less than optimistic, but the film retains a fascinating, almost surreal allure.

Roy Rogers plays a daring young Wild Bill Hickok in this wild west drama, who is stationed as a relay station agent, and must protect a shipment of gold. He decides to give the valuable goods to his friend Gabby (George Hayes) to help take the shipment to California. However, the plan goes south when a developing love triangle among Hickok, Calamity Jane (Sally Payne) and Louise Mason (Jacqueline Wells) causes the plan to be revealed man with villianous intent. Sent by a foreign government to steal the gold shipment, Nicholas Tower (John Miljan) is all too happy to hear of the plan, and sets about gathering his goons to raid the travelers. A western from 1930 that has been revived by the Troma team, THE LIGHT OF WESTERN STARS follows Dick Bailey (Richard Arlen) as he attempts to avenge the death of his closest friend. Suspecting the crooked Sheriff of the town, who seems to have eyes on the land of Bailey's deceased friend, his mission becomes sidetracked when he undertakes a drunken bet to marry the next woman he lays eyes on. Coincidentally, this turns out to be the sister of Bailey's dead buddy; initially rejecting his urges, she acquiesces when she learns of the Sheriff's land-stealing
intentions. Action, adventure, and a little romance ensues, in a little-known film that is a valuable addition to the canon of western movies.
