A complex plot and a noirish feel characterize this exciting Western, which takes place in part during a flashback from contemporary 1948. The tale centers on the legendary Lost Dutchman mine, worth $20 million and notorious for its apparent curse upon all those who attempt to claim it. The grandson of Jacob Dutch Waltz, who discovered it, sets out to relocate the mine, and the story travels back in time to follow Dutch (Glenn Ford, SUPERMAN) in his initial explorations. A wealthy prospector who has acquired his money by dubious means shows up in town with 297 pounds of gold ore to trade for cash. He cases a furor and attracts the attention of one Julia Thomas (Ida Lupino, ROAD HOUSE), a bakery owner who immediately undertakes the foreigner's seduction. RENEGADE is an ambitious hybrid of genres that occupies a liminal space similar to that of its main character, Mike Blueberry (Vincent Cassel). Building on the conventions of the Western and adding psychedelic elements and the sophisticated - albeit atypical - European sensibilities of director Jan Kounen, the result is a fascinating and compelling existential film about self-definition and the untapped regions of the mind.The film opens with a teenage Blueberry (Hugh O'Conor), a recent transplant to the southwest from the Cajun territory of Louisiana. He quickly becomes embroiled in a battle with local bad guy Wallace Sebastian Blount (Michael Madsen) when Blount gets violent during a visit to prostitute Madeleine, for whom Mike has fallen. Madeleine is killed in the fray, and the injured Mike is run out of town, surviving due only to the kindness of the Indians who find him and take him in. Years later Blueberry, now played by Cassel, has rejoined the white folks to become a town marshal, but when Wallace, who had been presumed dead, blows into town, Mike is forced to face up to some demons from his past. Wallace is accompanied by mysterious Prussian Prosit (Eddie Izzard), who has equipped him with magical powers, and together with the uber-wealthy Sullivan (Geoffrey Lewis, whose daughter Marie is played by real-life daughter Juliette Lewis), they are plotting to steal some valuables from the Indians residing in the mountains nearby. Adding a dose of whodunit mystery to classic B-movie western fare, this Guinn Big Boy Williams vehicle is certainly unique. Reclusive rancher John Duncan (Charles K. French) is about to draw up his will, which includes directions to the $50,000 he's hidden somewhere in the vicinity, when a masked intruder breaks in and shoots him in the heart. Duncan's son Big Boy, who comes to town in response to an urgent summons his father issued just before his death, is faced with the task of finding the killer, and quickly undertakes to do so with the aid of his sidekick, Windy (Bud Osborne). There are many suspects, as old Duncan had many enemies, including his neighbor, his lawyer, and his foreman.
