Wayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O'Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the actors having worked together previously on THE QUIET MAN.As this is by no means a revisionist western, McLintock's chauvinistic attempts to tame his wife fit within the problematic ideology of the larger western genre. Anthony Mann's edgy, psychological western features a powerful performance by Jimmy Stewart as a man obsessed. In the old west, cowboy Lin McAdam wins a valuable Winchester 1873 repeating rifle in a shooting contest--which his brother instantly steals. This leads to a rousing series of adventures for McAdam, as he attempts to track down the weapon, which passes through the hands of a number of dangerous people. Meanwhile, Lin also must deal with the cold-blooded murder of his father. Seeking vengeance, the cowboy sets out to find the killer. William Holden (NETWORK, SUNSET BOULEVARD) stars in this rugged Western--based on an actual incident--as a Mexican-Irish rancher who sells his herd to the Union army during the Civil War. An eye-patch-wearing Confederate colonel (Richard Widmark) tries to buy the cattle, but apolitical Kelly doesn't sell to him solely because he doesn't think Confederate money will ever be worth anything. However, the determined colonel kidnaps Kelly and forces him to steal the cattle back and drive them south to his hungry troops down in Virginia. Director Edward Dmytryk (THE CAINE MUTINY) provides the requisite roping, shooting, and punching; Johnny Mercer songs set the mood. There's also some romantic double-crossing as mansion owner Charity Warwick (Victoria Shaw) helps the colonel trap Kelly, who later repays the favor by wooing the colonel's frustrated sweetheart (Janice Rule). Holden is fairly laconic as Kelly, but Widmark brings furious energy to his role as the colonel. Weather-beaten regulars such as Arthur Franz, Patrick O'Neal, and Roger Carmel round out the cast.
