Joe Kidd (DVD)
Clint Eastwood stars as the title character in this low-key, moderately politicized variation of his spaghetti Westerns. In New Mexico in the late 1890s, the fiery Louis Chama (John Saxon) leads a group of Mexican-American peasants in a fight for their land after the evidence of their ownership has been destroyed in a questionable courthouse fire. The wealthy Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall), who also lays claim to the disputed land, has decided to bypass the legal system and hires a group of killers to take care of Chama. Kidd, who initially rejects Harlan's offer to join his hunting party, changes his mind when he finds that Chama has stolen some of his horses and brutalized one of his ranch hands. However, after seeing Harlan randomly pick off some Mexicans and becoming interested in Helen Sanchez (Stella Garcia), Kidd begins to think twice about his current employer. After he frees a group of hostages who are about to be mowed down by Harlan and his men, he takes off into the hills with Chama. Given the participants, JOE KIDD should have been much better, as it is somewhat hamstrung by an Elmore Leonard script that seems bored with its characters. That said, Duvall and Eastwood are excellent, as is Bruce Surtees' camerawork.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 2.35Single LayerAudio: Dolby Digital Mono 2.0 - English Dolby Digital Mono 2.0 - Spanish Dolby Digital Mono 2.0 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailer - 1.Original Theatrical Trailer Film HighlightsText/Photo Galleries: Production Notes Biographies - 1.Cast& Filmmaker

Dostoevsky's revolutionary novella is a psychological exploration of the psyche belonging to a man growning increasingly unhinged as his alienation from the rest of humanity becomes complete; this cinematic adaptation brings one of history's most important pieces of existential literature to life. Henry Czerny plays the Underground Man, a civil servant whose contempt for himself is paralleled only by that which he feels for the world around him. Arrogant and afflicted, he is nonetheless intelligent and extremely well-read, but holds the opinion that any such man in contemporary utilitarian society could be nothing but miserable when faced with the conditions of the world. The shame he feels for his life and actions finds an outlet in a video diary, in which he details his most troubling experiences, from dinner with old school friends whom he despises, to his relations with a prostitute, Liza (Sheryl Lee, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME). John Favreau (SWINGERS) and Seth Green (GREG THE BUNNY) round out the extremely talented cast of this critically acclaimed Sundance Film Festival Official Selection.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxedSingle-Side, Dual-LayerAudio: (unspecified) - English Subtitles - English - Closed CaptionedAdditional Relese Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
