The American turns out to be the journalist Ambrose Bierce (Gregory Peck), who disappeared in Mexico in 1913. The three characters become enmeshed in a love triangle that plays itself out against the dramatic backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. The Singing Cowboy and quintessential filmic good guy is The Whirlwind, crack postal inspector who arrives in Red Bluff to investigate a series of mail robberies. Big Jim Lassiter is in control of much of the land in the area, and Gene becomes suspicious of him when the charred remains of some stolen postal bonds turn up on his property, but he lacks the proof to confirm his suspicions. This arrives, however, in the form of Wade Trimble, a henchman of Big Jim's who confesses that Lassiter killed his own brother in order to steal his lovely niece Elaine's estate, and has also been setting up a bona fide old West crime syndicate responsible for the robberies. Although SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER features the same director and many of the same cast members as SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF, the film isn't a sequel to the latter movie. Instead, it's another delightful collaboration between director Burt Kennedy and leading man James Garner. This time around Garner plays Latigo Smith, a wandering con man who arrives in the town of Purgatory. When two competing mine owners mistake him for a hired gunman, Latigo sees a chance to get his hands on some of their ill-gotten gains.
