In this action-packed western, the outlaw John Henry (played by country legend Willie Nelson) has served his twenty-year sentence, and returns to upstanding society. However, he still holds a grudge against Captain Hayes (played by 1970s pop idol Shaun Cassidy), the Texas Ranger who put him in jail. To show Hayes who really controls the town, Henry robs a bank, and spurs Hayes to come out of retirement just to chase him down again. Robert Benton's directorial debut stars Jeff Bridges as young con man Jake Rumsey in this highly original Western. After Drew Dixon (Barry Brown), an upright young man, is sent west by his religious family to avoid being drafted into the Civil War, he drifts across the land with a loose confederation of young vagrants. He connects with the entertaining Jake, and they add a couple of others, including Loney (John Savage) and Arthur (Jerry Houser), to a gang that is barely surviving in the harsh climate of the West. They have to avoid confrontations not only with professional criminals--such as Big Joe (David Huddleston)--but also from hardened civilians who would kill a young boy for trying to steal a pie. Always outdoors, without as much as one horse among them, they're even at the mercy of the elements. As the boys' tribulations mount, their naive visions of cowboy glory fade, and Drew begins to realize that a life of crime may be his only means of survival.Though boasting a stellar cast, a strong script, and inspired direction, the film proved a disappointment at the box office, perhaps because of its bleak vision and loose, episodic narrative. A young Robert Mitchum stars as Pecos Smith in this classic Western, adapted from a novel by Zane Grey. Chicago tycoon Col. Lamberth (Thurston Hall) is prescribed a vacation by his doctor, so he heads out to his hacienda with his feisty daughter Rill (Barbara Hale). En route to Texas, Rill is accosted by some roughnecks and she decides to pass herself off as a boy. Subsequently, father and daughter witness the murder of a stagecoach driver (Bill Williams), a crime for which Pecos is blamed, while the true perpetrator is Brad Sawtelle (Harry Woods). After Pecos helps out the travelers, Rill convinces her father to hire him and his Irish-Mexican sidekick, Chito. Pecos soon finds out Rills true gender and love ensues, but Sawtelle still has a bone to pick, and by the time they reach the hacienda a full-fledged war has broken out.
