Set during the Civil War and supposedly based on a true incident, SILVER CANYON depicts a band of Southern marauders who dressed up as Union soldiers and pillaged Federal supply lines. Gene Autry is a cavalry scout who is in hot pursuit of the guerilla leader, Wade McQuarrie (Jim Davis), aided in his endeavor by his sidekick Cougar Glaggett (Pat Buttram). Together the pair follow the renegades to a frontier Army post called Gateway, which is under the command of Colonel Middler; frequent Autry costar Gail Davis plays Middler's daughter Dell, while Middler's son Walt is a McQuarrie sympathizer, that is until Dell and Gene are taken captive by the guerillas. This Spanish western from 1969 takes place in the northern section of Mexico. When a Texan comes to town and saves Erick (a young peasant about to be hanged by a group of local scoundrels), the two form a partnership and seek revenge on the men in question. The fighting only escalates when Erick and his Texan partner take a job working for the daughter of a man who was killed by the same crooks, culminating in a fierce duel to the death.
