Sidney Poitier directs and stars in this all-black western about an ex-Union Army cavalry soldier leading a group of recently-freed slaves to the western frontier in post-Civil War America. Tagging along with Buck are his wife Ruth (Ruby Dee) and a con man disguised as a preacher (Harry Belafonte, in his first onscreen pairing with Poitier). The black homesteaders' progress is seriously impeded by a sadistic racist (Cameron Mitchell) and his band of murderous thugs who resent the slaves' newfound freedom and wish to send them back to a life of servitude and sharecropping in Louisiana. With equal parts drama and comedy--as well as Biblical allusions to the story of Exodus--Buck and his followers must summon all their courage to contend with the racists on their journey to freedom.DVD Special FeaturesRegion 1 EncodingKeep CaseClosed CaptionedWidescreen AnamorphicTheatrical Trailer and PosterProduction NotesInteractive MenusScene Selection

Following in the footsteps of THE RIFLEMAN, Chuck Connors continued to epitomize the persona of the old west loner in this fondly remembered series. Although BRANDED only lasted two years, it gained a cult of devoted fans who found the show's unique perspective as thrilling as its gunfighting action. Connors' role as Jason McCord was an intriguing figure, the lone survivor of a Native American massacre who was dishonorably discharged and (in contrast to most legendary western characters) is seen as yellow by those who he meets in his frontier travels. Despite his reputation as the coward of Bitter Creek, McCord's relationship with President Ulysses S. Grant (William Bryant) has remained strong and the roaming gunman is often called upon for secret government missions. The characterization of the government and the references to the Civil War give the program interesting political undertones. The misunderstood lead character comes across many familiar faces in this collection of the entire first season as guest appearances include Jay Silverheels, John Carradine, June Lockhart, Chad Everett, and Cesar Romero. Sixteen episodes are included.DVD Features:All RegionsKeep Case3-Disc SetDisc One: Full Frame - 1.33Audio: Stereo Surround - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Bonus Feature - 1.
