His sons have hunted the fortune never recovered from the robbery for which he was convicted, but the search has torn them apart from each other and from Taggart. This tale of father-son relationships plays out against a classic American Western background. Roy Rogers plays a daring young Wild Bill Hickok in this wild west drama, who is stationed as a relay station agent, and must protect a shipment of gold. He decides to give the valuable goods to his friend Gabby (George Hayes) to help take the shipment to California. However, the plan goes south when a developing love triangle among Hickok, Calamity Jane (Sally Payne) and Louise Mason (Jacqueline Wells) causes the plan to be revealed man with villianous intent. Sent by a foreign government to steal the gold shipment, Nicholas Tower (John Miljan) is all too happy to hear of the plan, and sets about gathering his goons to raid the travelers. Sidney Poitier directs and stars in this all-black western about an ex-Union Army cavalry soldier leading a group of recently-freed slaves to the western frontier in post-Civil War America. Tagging along with Buck are his wife Ruth (Ruby Dee) and a con man disguised as a preacher (Harry Belafonte, in his first onscreen pairing with Poitier). The black homesteaders' progress is seriously impeded by a sadistic racist (Cameron Mitchell) and his band of murderous thugs who resent the slaves' newfound freedom and wish to send them back to a life of servitude and sharecropping in Louisiana.
